The 2024 Hunger Games
Every first Monday in May, celebrities line up to showcase the most beautiful gowns and outfits on the, not-always-red carpet of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This year, however, the event felt more like the Hunger Games, but in real life. The media took the comparison by storm, and people all over social media showed their disdain to the whole event, and the juxtaposition of the genocide in Gaza happening simultaneously.

Many people took it to social media to share their thoughts. It became a recurring trend to see the genocide being compared to the Met Gala, and felt like a wake-up call to many of the absurdity of it all. Celebs paying $75.000 dollars to get into the Met, whereas that same amount could help thousands in need.
The social media attention that this event got sparked a new trend, to boycott and block celebrities that don’t actively speak up about the genocide in Palestine. Even celebs like Billie Eilish, who did speak up about the matter, but was later seen supporting businesses that are aiding Israel, making their words and actions appear empty.

The Met Gala was not the first event that started whispers about the comparison to the Hunger Games.The annual Superbowl, which draws in millions of viewers annually, was also the topic of conversation. With tickets costing up to tens of thousands of dollars, pro-Isreal commercials, all the while the IDF attacked Rafah, a region in Gaza where the people were told they were safe. These two big events, with millions of viewers and lots of media attention, all seem like a distraction, while over 30.000 innocent people have been, and are being, murdered.
